LAUNCH OF LUNAR-A FOR ANOTHER YEAR DELAYED
Japan has postponed the launch of
Lunar-A,
a Moon probe that should have been launched during the summer of 1997
already. The whole probe system needs to be repaired after a liquid
leaked from the battery for onde of the probe's spear-shaped penetrators.
In these penetrators seismic intsruments are kept which have to collect
lunar seismic data to estimate the size of the Moon's core and study
how the Moon was formed. The new launch date will not be before the
summer of 1999.
