NOVEMBER 12/13: JUPITER OCCULTED STAR

On November 13, around 02 UT (for American observers Wednesday evening, November 12!), planet Jupiter occulted SAO 164156, a rather 'bright' star of magnitude + 6.0. The event could be observed from North and South America. From other locations it was seen how a "fifth bright satellite" shared the dance of the four Galilean satellites around Jupiter. On Thursday evening, the star can still be seen between Ganymede and Callisto.

JUPITER BEDEKT STER

JUPITERS OCCULTS STAR

November 11, 1997

On November 12, Wed. evening, Jupiter will occult 6.1-mag. Zodiacal Catalog (Z.C.) 3086 = SAO 164156 = PPM 238409 near theta Capricorni. Predictions for many cities and IOTA stations across North America are given in the two tables below. Observation around 8900 Angstroms in a methane absorption band will leave the star about 3 times as bright as the adjacent part of Jupiter and allow recording of spikes and other details of the Jovian atmospheric extinction; in the visual, the bright planet will probably overwhelm the star, rendering the Jovian extinction unobservable.

Diagrams of the occultation for a few observatories are on Doug Mink's planetary occultation Web site. The predictions below have been taken from that site and are given here so that you don't need to go to the Web site to obtain data for your location, or for one nearby. In the tables below, immersion is disappearance, emersion is reappearance, UT's are in hours, minutes, & seconds, and altitudes are in degrees. Send observation reports to Doug Mink at mink@cfa.harvard.edu and he will post them on his Web site.
